Marble is a metamorphic rock composed mostly of calcite – a crystalline form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and obtained through the metamorphosis of limestone. The most common marble colors are white, gray, beige, black and red. With the exception of some types of green marble, from a comercial point of view, the marble name can be given to any type of polished compact limestone, which includes most of the colored marble.
In our country, crystalline limestone or marbles can be found in the Fagaras Mountains, in Poiana Rusca Mountains and it is exploited in Ruschita and Alun. In Rodna massif there are white marbles wich used to be exploited at Vascau – Moneasa (closed for the moment) and polychrome marble can be found in the Apuseni Mountains. It shows very different aspects: from white to black, which provides perfect unicolor surfaces, to green or red with big white veins and so there are many soft and strong colors. For thousands of years, natural marble is used to decorate the interior and exterior spaces. Different types of beige marble were also regularry used, due to their warm and friendly looks.
Marble is used successfully in any kind of cladding: indoor or outdoor, horizontally or vertically, or to achieve decorative objects such as: tops, small furniture, fireplaces and other outsides. It is commonly used in light or medium traffic areas or environment, not in high traffic areas.
For a propper maintenance, avoiding staining or premature tarnishing of the marble there are recommended treatments with special washing detergents, sealing and / or wax.
